Explore the optical mechanics and clinical principles behind core diagnostic tools in eye care. From the optics of direct and indirect ophthalmoscopy to the fundamentals of objective retinoscopy, this video breaks down the ray tracing and physics you need for clinical practice and board preparation.

This video explores the principles and practical applications of low vision aids, helping ophthalmology residents understand how to improve functional vision in patients who cannot achieve adequate visual function with routine refractive correction alone. We discuss the optics of magnification, high-add spectacles, handheld and stand magnifiers, telescopes, and electronic magnification devices. The session also covers visual function assessment, scotomas and the preferred retinal locus, device selection, environmental modifications, and strategies to support reading, mobility and everyday independence. Special attention is given to the practical aspects of prescribing low vision aids, recognising the limitations of magnification, and tailoring rehabilitation to the patient's needs. Additional topics include Charles Bonnet syndrome, driving-related counselling, and the differences between paediatric and adult vision rehabilitation. The aim is to help residents move beyond visual acuity measurements and develop a more functional, patient-centred approach to low vision care.

Understanding clinical optics is essential for interpreting refraction, visual acuity, accommodation and binocular vision in everyday ophthalmic practice. This video explores how the human eye functions as an optical system, covering schematic and reduced eye models, ocular axes and angles, optical aberrations, pupil dynamics, accommodation and presbyopia. We will also discuss the duochrome test, contrast sensitivity, the AC/A ratio, methods of measuring visual acuity, and the classification of refractive errors and astigmatism. The session concludes with an overview of emmetropisation, myopia progression and current approaches to myopia control. Designed for ophthalmology residents, this session connects fundamental optical principles with their clinical applications, helping you understand not just the definitions, but also the reasoning behind common examination findings and refractive decisions.

This video covers the essential principles of contact lenses for ophthalmology residents, from basic optics and material properties to clinical fitting and complication management. Understand how contact lenses differ from spectacles, how the tear lens influences RGP lens power, and how base curve, sagittal depth and fluorescein patterns guide lens fitting. The session also explores soft toric lenses and the LARS rule, contact lens options for presbyopia, and specialised designs for keratoconus and irregular corneas, including piggyback and scleral lenses. Common complications such as corneal hypoxia, warpage, inflammation and microbial keratitis are discussed with a focus on clinical recognition and decision-making. Designed for resident-level learning and examination preparation, this video combines core concepts with practical clinical pearls and viva-oriented points to help you make informed contact lens choices and recognise potential complications.

Understanding ametropia is much more than remembering that myopia requires a minus lens and hypermetropia requires a plus lens. This video takes a deeper look at the optical principles behind refractive errors and their clinical correction. The discussion covers axial and refractive ametropia, hypermetropia and its different components, astigmatism and the Sturm conoid, anisometropia, pin-hole testing and the stenopaeic slit. It then moves into clinically important concepts such as the far point, effective lens power, back vertex distance and spectacle magnification. Special emphasis is placed on the optical problems of aphakia, including magnification, aniseikonia, prismatic effects, ring scotoma and the jack-in-the-box phenomenon. The video also introduces the optical principles underlying IOL power calculation, axial-length measurement and common biometry pitfalls. The aim is not simply to memorise formulas, but to understand why the optical system behaves the way it does. These concepts become particularly useful when dealing with high refractive errors, contact lenses, aphakia and cataract surgery. A useful video for ophthalmology residents preparing for examinations and for anyone who wants to build a stronger conceptual foundation in ophthalmic optics.

Understanding an optical prescription is much more than knowing how to write sphere and cylinder values. This video takes you through the principles behind spectacle prescriptions and their practical application in clinical refraction. The session covers spectacle prescription notation, simple and toric transposition, meridional power, retinoscopy and interpretation of reflexes, pseudoneutralisation, straddling and cylinder axis determination. It then moves into subjective refraction, including the stenopeic slit, Jackson cross-cylinder techniques, sphere refinement, duochrome testing and binocular balancing. The video also discusses cycloplegic refraction, overrefraction, spectacle lens identification and focimetry, prism calculation, photochromic lenses and antireflective coatings. The emphasis throughout is on understanding the optical reasoning behind each step, rather than simply memorising techniques. This makes the session useful for ophthalmology residents preparing for examinations as well as for developing a more systematic approach to everyday refraction.

This video covers the fundamental principles of spherical lenses, including their types, principal foci, image formation, lens power and vergence. It also explains linear and angular magnification, the optical principles behind a simple magnifying glass, and the prismatic effects of lens decentration. Designed for ophthalmology residents, this session connects basic optical concepts with clinical applications, making it easier to understand spectacle corrections, magnification and the optical challenges associated with high-powered lenses. A useful foundation for building confidence in clinical optics and preparing for postgraduate examinations.

This lecture explores the optical principles of astigmatic lenses, from the basic properties of cylindrical lenses to the formation of focal lines, toric surfaces and Sturm’s conoid. It also explains the Maddox rod and its role in assessing ocular deviations, along with the concept of spherical equivalent. The session concludes with a practical discussion of the Jackson cross-cylinder, focusing on the refinement of cylindrical axis and power during subjective refraction. Designed for ophthalmology residents, this lecture connects fundamental optics with clinical applications to help build a clear understanding of astigmatic correction and refraction techniques.

Prisms are an essential part of ophthalmic optics, with important applications in both the diagnosis and management of ocular deviations. This video explores the fundamental principles of prism optics, including deviation, minimum deviation, Prentice position, prism dioptres and vector addition. It also covers the clinical use of prisms in assessing squint, heterophoria, fusional reserves and microtropia, along with their therapeutic applications, prism prescriptions and use in ophthalmic instruments. Designed for ophthalmology residents, this session combines optical principles with clinical applications to build a clear understanding of a topic frequently encountered in examinations and everyday practice.
