Here are our top tips to protect your eyes from the cold weather.

1. Cold Weather and Dry Eye:

When winter sets in, the air becomes colder. This cold air in turn cannot hold as much water vapour as in warm weather. The tear film spread over the eyes-which is around 90% water-gets reduced due to evaporation. As a result, a cold and dry atmosphere ensues dryness of the eyes and skin. The eyes hurt and subsequently, reading on digital screens is hampered.

To get over this, use an adequate amount of lubricant eye drops as advised by your ophthalmologist. Use protective eyewear to shield your eyes while driving. Some tearing while outdoors is normal.

2. Refresh Indoor Air:

Similar to the outside, the air inside our homes also gets dry due to less water vapour content. Especially if we use an air conditioner at homes or workplaces. Warm dry air is even more dehydrating than cold dry air.

Intermittently, replacing the stuffy indoor air with fresh outdoor air does benefit our eyes and lungs. The use of a humidifier and indoor plants can help improve indoor air quality.
